Important notes about passport expiration dates:
- The U.S. Department of State recommends your passport have at least six (6) months of validity beyond your actual travel date to avoid expensive and lengthy travel disruptions. The normal rule for most countries is that they require you to have three (3) months from your actual travel date before your passport expires.
- U.S. citizens traveling on passports that expire in fewer than six (6) months have increasingly been denied airline boarding or have been detained upon arrival in certain foreign destinations, including popular European travel destinations in the Schengen area.
- This is not a new requirement, but it is only recently that the requirement has been more strictly enforced.
- For more information, check the U.S. Department of State's website.
