City Council delays water rates decision; city staff to present alternatives ahead of October budget adoption

This past Monday evening, June 14, Westminster City Council voted to not support the 2022 water and sewer rate recommendation presented by city staff. City Council is required to annually set the city’s water and sewer rates, which will expire on December 31.

Monday’s vote delays the rate decision until later this year. In the interim, staff will work on alternative rate proposals and scenarios for Council’s review. Since the 2021 water and sewer rates expire at the end of this year, City Council must adopt new rates for 2022 as part of the annual budget process. Westminster’s Home Rule Charter requires that the city’s budget be reviewed and approved no later than the fourth Monday in October. Water and sewer rates are typically approved by City Council ahead of the budget process, and staff will continue working on that timeline.

Monday, June 21, 2021 Update: During the City Manager’s Report portion of the June 21 City Council Study Session, the City Manager will seek feedback from Council on options for potential water rate tier adjustments.
