Why does it seem like it is taking a lot longer to build the new Downtown Westminster?
We often get this question from our residents, folks driving by the site and curious people who just want to know what’s going on.
As you’ve probably figured out by now, Downtown Westminster is unlike any other project. To get the full scoop we have to go back eight years to 2010 when the City of Westminster Economic Development Authority began to acquire vacant sites at the former Westminster Mall.
After countless resident surveys and open houses, and a fruitless search for a master developer for the project, the city announced in mid-2015 that it was going to take a “block by block” approach to the development of its new downtown.
What is block by block?
If you think about it, downtowns traditionally have developed on a block by block basis, over time.
That is key to Westminster’s goal of a true downtown. The city now works with a variety of developers to bring in a vibrant mix of residential, retail and office uses.
This “block by block” approach embraces an eclectic energy that the residents wanted for their new downtown — not just another retail center. It will be a true community gathering hub, featuring shopping, dining, cultural and civic attractions, as well as a place for people to live and work.
This curated approach takes time, but will be worth the wait in the end!
