PRL Planning and Design and Forestry Unite at Squires Park to Implement a Comprehensive Tree Protection Plan, Setting a New Sustainability Standard

October 24, 2024 - The City Forestry Team and the Parks Planning and Design team from Westminster's Parks, Recreation, and Libraries Department (PRL) recently joined forces to protect the mature, healthy tree canopy at Squires Park during its renovation. Prior to construction, City staff thoroughly evaluated and removed trees in poor condition, along with a few that conflicted with the updated park design, focusing on preserving the healthiest and most valuable trees.

The PRL team executed a comprehensive tree preservation strategy, which included crown pruning and the installation of protective fencing around critical root zones, extending beyond the dripline. Additionally, engineered paths made of geotextile fabric and mulch were created to allow construction vehicles to move across the site without compacting the roots of several specimen spruce trees near the renovation area.

To support tree health during construction, the team has also initiated a hand-watering program, providing the necessary moisture while the park’s irrigation system is upgraded for greater efficiency.

These actions reflect the City’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its dedication to safeguarding the natural beauty of Squires Park for future generations.
