Art is blooming in Historic Westminster

Art is blooming in Historic Westminster

A sculpture garden has bloomed at Harris Park where eight sculptures were installed this past August as part of the Art on Loan program. The artwork is a valuable community asset that beautifies the reflective park ambience at 3915 West 73rd Ave. (on the east side of the Rodeo Market Building) and will be displayed through June 2021.

The location, a cherished neighborhood landmark, is a quiet green space and well maintained thanks to city Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department staff. The installation contributes to the overall aesthetics and cultural identity of the Historic Westminster community.

The art works are a mixture of painted aluminum, hand-forged steel, welded steel with cast glass, bronze, Colorado Yule marble and enameled steel.

The city provides a $1,000 stipend to artists displaying their work in the garden for 24 months. The artists are mostly from Colorado. They are: Jodie Bliss (Colo.), Charlotte Zink (Colo.), Merelee Whitcomb (Colo.), Colette Pitcher (Colo.), Gerry Newcomb (Washington) and Mary Angers (New Jersey).

Artists applied to the call for art through Café, a portal for artists to submit their work to art competitions. Submissions were reviewed and voted on by a jury panel selected by the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs and included staff from PR&L, the Community Development Department, the Economic Development Department, a local art gallery owner and a member of City Council.

Enhancing the character of the community through public art supports the city’s strategic plan goals of vibrant, inclusive and engaged community; dynamic, diverse economy; and beautiful, desirable, safe and environmentally responsible city.

The Art on Loan program provides an opportunity for artists to prominently display their artwork in an historic and unique area of the city for the public to enjoy.
