At the July 22 meeting, City Council recognized the Semper Drinking Water Treatment Facility, an unsung hero of the Westminster community, with a proclamation celebrating its 50th anniversary. The city’s Public Works and Utilities Department has been operating this facility since 1969 to provide Westminster businesses and families with reliable, high-quality drinking water 24 hours a day, every day.
Community members are invited to tour the Semper Drinking Water Treatment Facility Thursday, August 15, or Saturday, August 17. Because this is a secure facility, registration is required.
The city has two water treatment facilities that produce drinking water that continually meets or exceeds all state and federal drinking water quality standards. The Semper Water Treatment Facility is capable of treating 44 million gallons per day using conventional filtration technology. The Northwest Water Treatment Facility is capable of treating up to 15 million gallons per day using state-of-the-art membrane micro-filtration.
The facilities are designed to remove dissolved and suspended solids, manganese, iron, offensive tastes and odors and pathogenic micro-organisms.
Average daily water consumption for the city is currently 18 million gallons per day with a peak day of up to 44 million gallons per day.
Water 2025 is a long-term planning project to replace the city's aging Semper Water Treatment Facility by 2025 and ensure high-quality drinking water for our community now and into the future.
