Dear Westminster Community,
In the time since George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, our hearts have broken again and again – for Mr. Floyd’s friends and family grieving his senseless and sudden loss; for the families of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, whose sorrows are so near and raw; and for every Black person in this country who has ever felt fear doing the common activities of daily life.
We join with the Westminster Police Department and Police Chief Tim Carlson in condemning the indefensible use of force that led to Mr. Floyd’s death and in calling for officers to be held accountable for their actions. “In Westminster, our ability to properly serve is built on trust,” Carlson said. “Events such as this strain that trust which we are committed to strengthen and enhance each day going forward with every member of our community.”
While we don’t claim to personally know the daily injustices and racism that Black Americans have shouldered for centuries, we can say that this must end now. We can’t be silent when people experience mistreatment because of the color of their skin. As a country, as a society and as a community we must do better.
The place we will start is here in Westminster, our home. For people whose families have been here for generations, people originally from other parts of the state or the U.S. and people who’ve moved here from other countries, Westminster is a choice. Of all the places to put down roots – to live and to raise families, to build businesses, to work – many have chosen Westminster as home.
It’s home because it’s a place to be safe, accepted and heard. As your City Council, these are values we hold closely, not merely words we say in difficult times. They are the bedrock of our community and they guide our actions as we work together building a home where every resident knows they are welcome and knows they belong.
While we have made important progress in the work of inclusivity and representation, including forming the Westminster Inclusivity Board in 2015, we need to do more.
We are committed to listening and learning from members of our community about issues of race, inclusivity and safety, and we also are committed to following up with action. It’s not enough to say that Black lives matter if we don’t amend our institutions and ideas to ensure that’s actually the case.
We also are dedicated to ensuring that residents feel safe in expressing concerns and secure in the knowledge that their voice is equal to that of every other person in this community. We look to residents for partnership in determining what actions we must take to continue building Westminster into a community where everyone – every race, every religion, every nationality – can know that they are home.
In the coming weeks and months we ask each Westminster resident to consider how you might contribute to making this a welcoming community, and how we as your City Council can best serve you in working toward that goal. We will continue partnering with city staff and boards, as well as community organizations and stakeholders, to understand the full spectrum of experience and perspectives represented in Westminster. We will ask them to develop actionable steps to talk about and weed out racism in our community. We will work with city staff to create opportunities to volunteer and get involved. We will listen without judgment.
Westminster is home. And every person who has chosen to plant their roots here is vital to making Westminster the place where we want to be.

Desde que un policía de ciudad de Minneapolis mato a George Floyd, nuestros corazones se han roto de nuevo – por la familia y amigos del Señor Floyd que hoy están de luto por su partida tan repentina. Nuestro corazón también está roto por las familias de Ahmaud Arbery y Breonna Taylor, porque esa pena también está tan cercana, y por todas las personas de color en este país que han sentido miedo al hacer cosas cotidianas.
Nos unimos al Departamento de Policía y al Jefe de Policía Tim Carlson para denunciar el uso indefensible de fuerza que llevo a la muerte del Señor Floyd y hacemos un llamado para que se responsabilice a los policías por sus acciones. “En Westminster, nuestra habilidad para servir a la gente esta basada en la confianza”, Carlson dijo. “Eventos como este ponen en riego esa confianza, la cual estamos comprometidos a fortalecer todos los días, desde este momento, con cada uno de los miembros de esta comunidad”.
Aunque no sabemos personalmente las injusticias diarias y el racismo de la gente de color ha cargado en sus hombros por siglos, si podemos decir que esto debe para hoy. No podemos quedarnos callados cuando la gente es maltratada por su color de piel. Como país, como sociedad y como comunidad, debemos ser mejor.
El lugar para empezar es aquí en Westminster, nuestro hogar. Para las familias que han estado aquí por generaciones, las personas que originalmente son de otras partes del país y las personas que se han mudado aquí de otros países, Westminster es una opción. De todos los lugares para echar raíces, para vivir y tener una familia, construir negocios y trabajar, muchos han escogido a Westminster como su hogar.
Le llamamos hogar porque es un lugar donde se puede estar seguro, ser aceptado y escuchado. Como su Concejo Municipal, estos valores son mas que palabras que se puedan decir en tiempos difíciles. Estos valores son los cimientos de nuestra comunidad que guían nuestras acciones mientras trabajamos juntos para construir un hogar en el cual cada residente sabe que es bienvenido y que pertenece.
Mientras hemos hecho importantes progresos en el área de inclusividad y representación, incluyendo formar el Consejo de Inclusividad en el 2015, necesitamos hacer más.
Estamos comprometidos a escuchar y aprender de los miembros de nuestra comunidad sobre cuestiones raciales, inclusividad y seguridad. No es suficiente decir que las vidas de la gente de color importan si no enmendamos nuestras instituciones e idead para asegurar que ese sea el caso.
También estamos dedicados a asegurar que los residentes se sientas seguros al expresar sus preocupaciones y que sepan que si voz es igual de importante que la de los demás. Queremos construir una alianza con nuestros residentes para determinar que acciones necesitamos tomas para seguir construyendo una comunidad de servicio donde todos – cada persona con diferente origen racial, de diferente religión y cada nacionalidad –sepa que están en su hogar.
En la semanas y meses siguientes, les pedimos a cada uno de los residentes de Westminster que consideren como deben contribuir para hacer de esta ciudad una comunidad acogedora, y como nosotros, como su Concejo Municipal podemos servirlos mejor y trabajar juntos. Continuaremos trabajando con el personal de la ciudad y los consejos y comités, así como organizaciones comunitarias y sectores interesados, para entender por completo la experiencia y perspectivas representadas en Westminster. Les pediremos que tomes pasos viables para eliminar el racismo en nuestra comunidad. Trabajaremos con el personal de la ciudad para crear oportunidades de voluntariado. Escucharemos sin juagar.
Westminster lo llamamos hogar y todas las personas que han decidido echar raíces aquí son vitales para hacer de esta ciudad es lugar donde todos queremos vivir.
