As Westminster Colorado City Councillors, we have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. This common bond compels us to take a stand against the Jan. 6 desecration of the U.S. Capitol, the horrific acts of violence, and the attempt to undermine constitutional processes at the heart and soul of our democracy. We are sickened by these events and mourn the loss of life. This assault does not represent the values and laws on which our country was built.

We support the right to hold differing values, disagree with the government, and peacefully protest and exercise free speech. After an open and candid discussion of recent events, as a Council, we stand united in condemning acts of violence, property destruction, and calls to impede our government unlawfully. While acknowledging those individuals exercising their right to peacefully protest, we call for the accountability of those involved in this atrocity.

The presence of symbols associated with racism and white supremacy at the Capitol has fueled further fear and anger across our nation. As a welcoming community, we condemn all acts motivated by hate and bigotry and remain committed to all residents' public safety, health and quality of life, and the right to participate in electing representatives at every level of government.

One of the hallmarks of our precious democratic republic is the peaceful transition of power. We applaud the tenacity of our Congress, who reconvened to confirm the electoral win of our next President. We call on all Americans to recognize our new administration, uphold our constitution and laws, and understand the demanding role of our state and national elected officials during this time of heightened tension and significant global challenge.

Though the trials of this past year have worn us down and divided many in our nation, we are not without hope. Together, as a community, we can work towards a better tomorrow. We challenge ourselves and you, our neighbors and constituents, to be the change you wish to see. There are opportunities in every conversation—whether in person or online—to show kindness. Let’s strive to embrace differences and seek to understand the views and beliefs of others.

Let us all demonstrate grace and find that which unites us. Brighter days are ahead. We are eager to once again gather together as friends and residents to celebrate our community, our diversity and our resilience.
