Sheridan traffic pattern changes start next week for bikeway underpass construction
Sheridan Boulevard between Turnpike Drive and the eastbound U.S. Highway 36 ramps will be in a temporary lane configuration through summer 2022. Work starts Tuesday night on lane closures and configuration changes at the Sherian Boulevard and West 88th intersection. All turn movements will be maintained at the intersection.
By mid-January, northbound Sheridan Boulevard will be reduced to two through lanes approaching US 36 and the southbound lanes of Sheridan Boulevard will shift east in order to construct the western half of the new US 36 Bikeway underpass.
Drivers should expect overnight lane closures and traffic shifts on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. while the contractor restripes Sheridan Boulevard and prepares the road for the new configuration.
Two lanes will remain open in each direction on Sheridan Boulevard during the phased underpass construction. View the construction phasing map here.
Project Background:
The Sheridan Boulevard Multimodal Transportation Improvement project – known as the Sheridan Underpass – is a federal transportation investment in mobility for all modes of travel. This project creates a direct bicycle and pedestrian connection between Downtown Westminster and the Regional Transportation District’s US 36 and Sheridan Station. Several improvements to Sheridan Boulevard are also part of the project.
Project Highlights: The contractor team led by CEI will construct major roadway improvements on Sheridan Boulevard through early 2023. Project features include:
- Widening Sheridan Boulevard to six lanes from Turnpike Drive to West 88th Place
- Constructing a new US 36 Bikeway underpass connecting Downtown Westminster to the RTD US 36 and Sheridan Station
- Upgrading traffic signals at the Sheridan Boulevard / West 88th Avenue intersection
- Placing curb ramps, concrete medians, street lights and pedestrian lights
- Improving storm sewer drainage system
Travel Impacts: Construction activities will be phased to minimize traffic impacts. Sheridan Boulevard will remain open during construction, and access to adjacent properties will be maintained.
Starting in early 2022, Sheridan Boulevard will be reduced to two lanes in each direction and shift east in order to construct a portion of the new US 36 Bikeway underpass below Sheridan Boulevard. This configuration will be in place through summer 2022.
The US 36 Bikeway is closed between West 88th Avenue and West 92nd Avenue to accommodate construction. Local bike and pedestrian detours are in place.
All work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.
