Construction of the west half of the new Sheridan underpass for the U.S. Highway 36 Bikeway is nearly complete. Moving Sheridan Boulevard traffic west onto the new structure is necessary for crews to construct the eastern half of the underpass. Crews will work overnight on Sept. 8 to move traffic into the new configuration.

Drivers should expect overnight lane closures and traffic shifts starting at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8 to 5 a.m. on Friday while the contractor restripes Sheridan Boulevard between the eastbound US 36 ramps and West 88^th Avenue. This temporary traffic pattern will be in place through late 2022.

Two lanes will remain open in each direction on Sheridan Boulevard during the phased underpass construction. View the construction phasing map here.

This traffic shift signifies a major milestone for one of the Westminster’s priority transportation projects. In addition to constructing half the underpass, the contractor is finishing intersection improvements at West 88^th Avenue and the US 36 ramps.

Project Background:

The Sheridan Boulevard Multimodal Transportation Improvement project – known as the Sheridan Underpass – is a federal transportation investment in mobility for all modes of travel. This project creates a direct bicycle and pedestrian connection between Downtown Westminster and the Regional Transportation District’s US 36 and Sheridan Station. Several improvements to Sheridan Boulevard are also part of the project.

Project Highlights: The contractor team led by CEI will construct major roadway improvements on Sheridan Boulevard through early 2023. Project features include:

• Widening Sheridan Boulevard to six lanes from Turnpike Drive to West 88^th Place
• Constructing a new US 36 Bikeway underpass connecting Downtown Westminster to the RTD US 36 and Sheridan Station
• Upgrading traffic signals at the Sheridan Boulevard / West 88^th Avenue intersection
• Placing curb ramps, concrete medians, streetlights and pedestrian lights
• Improving storm sewer drainage system

Travel Impacts: Construction activities will be phased to minimize traffic impacts. Two lanes will remain open in each direction on Sheridan Boulevard during construction, and access to adjacent properties will be maintained.

The US 36 Bikeway is closed between West 88^th Avenue and West 92^nd Avenue to accommodate construction. Local bike and pedestrian detours are in place.
