Case Number: 2020-13025

Subject: Stabbing at Circle K (7584 Sheridan Blvd)

Updated: January 6, 2021

The homicide related to the stabbing at 76th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard on New Year’ Eve remains an active and ongoing investigation.  Since the incident occurred, detectives identified both suspects who confronted the victim and a third who is a person of interest.  Through the investigation, police determined the suspects knew the victim and the confrontation appears to have occurred because of a dispute over roughly $40 dollars.

On January 3, 2021, the Westminster Police Department received a call from the victim’s family indicating they saw one of the suspect’s walking in the area of 72nd Avenue and Raleigh Street.  Police caught up to the male and after determining his identity, he was taken into custody without incident.  Deven Mykol Lamaster (DOB: 07-30-92) is being held at the Adams County Detention Facility.

Investigative leads led detectives to believe the second suspect, Brett Philip Kalina (DOB: 07-18-92) had fled the state and was believed to be in Decatur, Illinois.  Westminster detectives coordinated with authorities in Illinois who were able to apprehend Mr. Kalina and recover the vehicle used during the homicide.  Mr. Kalina is being held at a detention facility in Illinois awaiting an extradition hearing.

Detectives will file the following charges on both individuals with the Adams County District Attorney’s Office:

  • CRS 18-3-202 (1)(a) Murder in the First Degree – After Deliberation
  • CRS 18-3-103  Murder in the Second Degree
  • CRS 18-4-302 (1)(c) Aggravated Robbery (2-counts)

This investigation is still active and ongoing as detectives identify the getaway driver as a person of interest and determine the extent of her involvement.  Her identity is not being released at this time pending the application of an arrest warrant.  The identities of Mr. Lamaster and Mr. Kalina were not released previously as detectives were still working with witnesses to identify both suspects.

Date – December 31, 2020

At about 6:21pm, the Westminster Police Department received a 911 call regarding a stabbing that just happened at the Circle K located at 7584 Sheridan Boulevard.

The police officers who first arrived were provided information that a male, possibly in his early twenties, was leaving the store when he was confronted by a single male and then a second.  During the confrontation the victim was stabbed and suffered life threatening injuries.

The suspect’s fled from the area in a vehicle, but conflicting information has made it difficult for police to identify and confirm the suspect’s vehicle description and license plate.  The victim was transported to an area hospital by paramedics from the Westminster Fire Department, but he died as a result of his injuries.

Some information was provided to police that this may be gang related, but it is too early in the investigation to verify if that information is accurate.  Detectives are working to develop additional suspect descriptions and the department will provide more information as it becomes available.

Police will be collecting evidence at the scene and ask residents to avoid the area for the next hour.  If anyone has information they are asked to call the Westminster Police Department at 303-658-4360.  If you have questions related to this investigation please email Sergeant Trevor Materasso at tmateras@westminsterco.gov.
