Subject: Barricaded Subject/Officer Involved Shooting
May 10, 2017
This evening around 5:20p.m. Westminster police officers located a male party who was associated with a stolen vehicle and known to have multiple warrants for his arrest. At least one of the warrants was felony in nature. When officers attempted to contact the male, he ran inside a house he was associated with around the 1300 block of 135th Drive.
Other occupants inside the house exited, leaving the male inside alone. The male was told he was under arrest and was given multiple commands to exit the house. The male refused to comply and barricaded himself inside the home. Police were given information that the male was armed with a gun.
Homes in the immediate area were notified and given safety instructions from officers to either evacuate or shelter in place.
The Westminster PD SWAT team responded to the scene. The SWAT team attempted multiple tactics to get the suspect to surrender peacefully, but the suspect refused to exit the home.
When officers entered the residence, an exchange of gunfire took place. An officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to an area hospital. A K9 also sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to an emergency veterinarian for treatment. The suspect was shot by officers and died on scene.
No identities are being released at this time.
There will be an on-going investigation at the scene for several hours. 135th Drive will be closed between Kalamath St. and Navajo St. during this time. The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Team will be conducting the investigation.
