City awarded grant to construct underpass beneath Sheridan Boulevard
The City of Westminster will receive $6.5 million in federal and state funding to construct an underpass beneath Sheridan Boulevard. The Denver Regional Council of Government awarded the city a grant in the amount of $5.5 million. In addition, the Colorado Department of Transportation dedicated $1 million in support of the project.
A core benefit to this project is the underpass installation, located at approximately West 89th Avenue, routing the heavily-utilized U.S. bikeway beneath Sheridan Boulevard.
The new route for the U.S. 36 bikeway will increase safety for these commuters by removing one of the final street crossings in this regional trail.
Another benefit is the addition of a southbound lane from the U.S. 36 bridge to Turnpike Drive to improve traffic operations on Sheridan Boulevard. This additional lane will produce a six-lane roadway with a concrete median, and create a consistent lane configuration for the highway.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022 and is anticipated to be complete in 2023. The city will provide additional information and engagement as the project progresses, and prior to the start of construction.
