City’s Planning division launches junior city planner activity book
The city’s Community Development Department’s Planning Division is unveiling an 18-page youth activity and coloring book titled “Let’s Have Fun in Westminster by Becoming a Junior City Planner!” Created initially from presentations in front of third graders on the topics of planning and how a city grows, the activity book seeks to educate Westminster youth on what planning is. The book features two characters, “Cleo the Cow” and “Sammy the Squirrel,” who teach kids everything from site planning to why we need drainage control. Each page can be colored and features Cleo and Sammy in an interactive, comic book format.
Part of the day-to-day job of a city planner is to educate the public on what planning is and this activity book provides insight into that profession – taught at the third grade level.
Drawn by Urban Designer Sean McCartney with input from local school teachers and feedback from everyone in the Planning Division, this activity book will be handed out to participating schools and copies will be available at the Planning/Building counter.
Once children have completed their activity book as a part of their class curriculum, they will receive a sticker announcing them as “Junior City Planners.” If this program is successful, McCartney hopes to provide assistance to any division interested in advancing their educational outreach.
Please contact McCartney at 303-658-2095 or smccartn@westminsterco.gov for questions.
