Council vacancy to be decided in Nov. 2 election

On Monday, June 7, Westminster City Council was unable to fill by majority vote  the council vacancy that resulted when then-Mayor Pro Tem Anita Seitz assumed the role of Mayor on May 10. With the council seat vacant for more than 30 days, a special election is required to select a person to hold the vacant office for the remainder of the unexpired term.

On Monday, June 14, Council adopted a resolution calling for a special election to fill this vacancy in coordination with the regularly scheduled election on November 2, 2021.

At the November 2 regular election, the office of Mayor and three City Council seats are to be determined for regular four-year terms. Pursuant to Westminster Municipal Code and Colorado Revised Statutes, all four City Council seats (three full terms and the current vacancy) will be determined by one question where all candidate names are listed and voters choose four candidates. The top three highest vote recipients will serve the three open four-year terms, and the fourth highest vote recipient will serve the remainder term of the vacant seat.

Nomination timelines and procedures for persons seeking election to the vacant City Council seat are identical as those for persons seeking election to the regular four-year term City Council seats.

The office of Mayor shall be determined in a separate question, as normal, during the November 2 regular election.

A separate special recall election is proceeding on July 20. Details are available here: https://www.cityofwestminster.us/Government/Departments/CityClerk/Elections/RecallElection.
