National Public Works Week: A time to say thank you

Drink a glass of water. Flush the toilet. Drive to the store. It’s easy to take these things for granted, thanks to public works departments across the country.

For National Public Works Week from May 17-23, we recognize the contributions made by the 158 Public Works and Utilities Department staff that work through nights, weekends, even a pandemic, to continue delivering the critical services our community depends on every day.


Here is a list of just a few services delivered by Public Works and Utilities staff and the infrastructure they maintain:

  • Maintenance of 1,135 miles of streets and over 18,000 street signs
  • Snow and ice removal during winter storms
  • Street sweeping
  • Water quality protection and monitoring
  • Two drinking water treatment facilities
  • One wastewater treatment facility
  • One reclaimed water treatment facility
  • Over 530 miles of drinking water pipes
  • Over 5,000 hydrants
  • 18 pump stations and 11 storage tanks
  • Over 400 miles of sewer pipe
  • 11 sewer lift stations
  • Long term infrastructure planning and asset management
  • Water conservation / efficiency
  • Water bill assistance
